What is Somatic Experiencing®
A BODY-AWARE APPROACH
Somatic Experiencing® is a body-aware approach to trauma therapy. We gently notice what is happening in the present—such as a sensation, emotion, or impulse—and explore it at a pace that feels manageable. You do not need to know exactly what you are looking for or have the right words to begin.
When your body is still responding to the past
WHEN THE PAST SHOWS UP IN THE PRESENT
Your body may register and respond to experiences before you consciously understand what is happening or have words for it. Some experiences begin very early in life, even before language. We can gently notice what is happening now without forcing a story or assuming what a sensation means.
-
Tensing your jaw, shoulders or stomach
-
Feeling restless, on edge or unable to settle
-
Feeling numb, heavy, or disconnected from your body
Ways it might show up in your body:
A gentle, body-focused
way to work.
WHAT SESSIONS CAN LOOK LIKE
We'll move at a pace that feels manageable. We may notice sensations, emotions, or impulses together, without forcing a story or needing to have the right words. If we use table therapy or supportive touch, it is always discussed and only with your consent.
A Gentle, Body-Based Path Toward Healing
Somatic Experiencing® offers a gentle, naturalistic approach to healing that supports the nervous system in releasing the effects of overwhelming experiences. By working with the body's innate wisdom, it can help restore a sense of safety, regulation, and a greater ease in daily life.
Many people find that this work leads to increased resilience, more fulfilling relationships, and a deeper connection with themselves. While each person's experience is unique, Somatic Experiencing® can be a powerful foundation for lasting change and renewed well-being.
AN INTEGRATED APPROACH
Somatic Experiencing® and EMDR
I'm trained in both Somatic Experiencing® and EMDR. Depending on your needs and goals, we may use one approach or integrate elements of both. We can talk together about what feels like a good fit.
